Timeless Magic, 1965 - 2015
46 TIMELESS MAGIC the resort to its audience well in advance of its opening Four rounds were played and the matches were edited and then broadcast in March 1965 Nicklaus offers these remembrances My fondest memory is that I won he says with a laugh We played Mauna Kea before the hotel was there They had just opened the golf course Ill never forget we went down to the beach after the round and someone on the crew had a bottle of some liquor vodka or rum and they would throw the bottle back and forth in the surf We would sit with the crew and everybody involved in the production and just had a lot of fun Adds Player I have so many wonderful memories from Jack Arnold and I playing at Mauna Kea in the 1960s Mauna Kea is truly nature at its best and the golfing experience there is just fantastic nothing quite like it Before the hotel was even opened Jack Arnold and I would go for daily swims at the half moon shaped beach It is just a paradise that captures the spectacular beauty of Hawai i Palmer Gary Player would agree with me I think that the most fun we had filming golf shows was when Jack joined us for Big 3 Golf at Mauna Kea Most of the conversation and the apocryphal tales since revolved around No 3 For every 20 accounts there are 20 different versions of what took place on that hole as the Big 3 Matches were unfolding The most accepted rendition is that the far back tee of 250 yards which demanded a 230 yard carry over the ocean proved too much for Player to handle so the players and producers agreed to move up and use the 210 yard tee Nicklaus struggled most with the into the wind par three 11th being forced to use his driver on one day an unusual occurrence for one of golfs longest hitters He bogeyed the hole all four days He played the par five 10th much more successfully making two eagles and two birdies in the four Mauna Kea is the most fun golf course Ive ever played Jack Nicklaus
